Julian Shiroma Biography

Shiroma Hanshi, Hachidan (8th Degree Black Belt), is 55, lives in Captain Cook on the
Big Island of Hawaii. In September 2010, Shiroma and Craig Hamakawa, Hachidan,
San Francisco, CA., were appointed Hanshi by Walter K. Nishioka Shihan, Founder and
Chief Instructor of the International Karate League (IKL). As Hanshi, Shiroma’s duties
include overseeing all the Hawaii dojos. Hamakawa Hanshi oversees all the mainland
dojos.

Shiroma remains a member of the IKL Board of Governors and is the Head Instructor
for three Kona Dojos in Region 2: Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, and the Kealakehe Dojo.
The Kona Dojos are host to the annual IKL Karate Championship held every November
at the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kailua-Kona. 2013 marks its 9th year running.

Born in Hilo, HI, Shiroma began his karate training in 1972 under former IKL Sensei
James Kudo, Hilo Dojo. In 1986, due to a job promotion, he moved to Kona where he
presently resides.

Shiroma Hanshi retired (Dec. 2003) as a Captain of the Criminal Investigation Division
of the Hawaii County Police Dept. after 25 years service. While on the Police force he
was the Weaponless Defense Head Instructor and trained the police in Arrest, Control
Techniques. He also received specialized training in Aiki-jujitsu as it relates to Arrest,
Control Techniques from Sensei Bernie Lau, Founder of Icho-ryu Aiki-jujitsu, Mount
Lake Terrace, Washington. Shiroma Hanshi is also a Board of Director for the Hawaii
Police Athletic Federation.

He received an AS degree in Police Science from Hilo Community College in 1979, and
graduated from the FBI National Academy in December 1997. He has competed in
Karate at the International Law Enforcement Olympics held in Australia, Canada, and
the U.S., placing in both Kata and Kumite.

Shiroma Hanshi is married to Naomi Ann, and is the father of four children, Jerry (36),
Jurene (34), Jace (17) and Jenna (15). Jace and Jenna are Shodans.

Outside of Karate, his interests are Surfing, Camping, and Racing Homing Pigeons.
He also releases white doves at weddings, funerals, graduations, and other special
occasions and events. Most recently, he got back into riding motorcycles and is
presently forming “Hawaii’s Finest Motorcycle CRU”, the core members being retired
and former police officers.

Our IKL San Francisco Tournament on July 20th is fast approaching. Just a friendly reminder for all:
 
1) If you have not yet done so, please go towww.ikltournaments.org to register for the tournament by end of May.
 
2) Please send your dojo group pictures as soon as possible directly to Pease Sensei at:  marc.pease@gmail.com
 
3) IKL merchandise are available for purchase that will help to financially support the tournament and IKL.
 
4) Dinner function will be on the evening after the Tournament. (Sign-up online)
 
5) Suggested hotels are also online. Others who may want to stay at someone's home in the city can check out this site:
 
6) Shihan enjoys going to Alcatraz Tour. For those who would like to join him on this trip (7/22 Monday), I have             reserved total of 25 slots as a group trip, but will need to give total count and pay 30 days before the tour date.            (the departure time will be known 90 days before the date, either 9:30 am, 10 am or 10:30 am).
   
    Ticket Prices: Adults (18-61) $30.00, Junior (12-17) $30.00, Child (5-11) $18.00, Senior (62+) $28.25, Toddlers (0-4)     Free.

    Also, please let her know if you would like to do a wine tasting, cheese & tour ($20) or wine tasting, cheese ($15).         This in addition to the transportation fee, and the winery needs the count 3 weeks before the date. I encourage all who     drinks wine to sign-up for this. Those who are non-drinking age receives complimentary tour.
